A medieval community was typically a walled urban settlement that emerged in Europe from the 5th to the late 15th century.
They housed merchants, artisans, clergy, nobles, and laborers, and were often enclosed by stone walls with guarded gates for defense and control of movement. Some key features of this type of community;
Markets and fairs for trade in goods like food, textiles, and crafts.
Guilds regulating crafts, training, and wages.
Charters granting legal autonomy, rights to hold markets, and self-governance.
Churches, town halls, and market crosses as symbols of civic authority.
Social functions such as public meetings, announcements, and festivals.
In the spirit of these communities it is my plan to attach links to other pages outside of this website for resources, art, crafts, things I find interesting.
Fun Fact:
Contrary to popular belief, medieval authorities did impose building regulations. These laws controlled:
How far upper floors could extend over streets
Which materials were allowed (stone preferred over flammable timber)
Where waste outlets could be placed
How close neighbors could build
